What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a gentle cosmetic treatment that involves using a specialized tool to carefully remove the top layers of your skin. This minimally invasive procedure is often performed by healthcare providers.
Dermaplaning can help minimize the appearance of acne scars and other skin imperfections by revealing fresh, undamaged skin underneath. It can give your skin a more youthful appearance, although it doesn’t prevent aging. Additionally, some people choose dermaplaning for temporary hair removal, as the hair will grow back.
While most people opt for dermaplaning on their face, it can be done on other parts of the body as well.
One of the trendiest hair removal options today is dermaplaning, which is performed using a scalpel to manually exfoliate dead skin cells from the face.
Benefits of Dermaplaning
The benefits of dermaplaning can vary based on your skin type, tone, medical history, and the expertise of the professional performing the procedure.
Some potential cosmetic benefits of dermaplaning include:
- A brighter, more youthful skin tone
- Removal of small hairs or peach fuzz
- Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles
- Smoother skin texture
- Reduction of hyperpigmentation
- Evening out of skin tone
- Removal of bacteria and clearing of pores to help prevent breakouts
- Diminishing deep scars from acne or pox
- It is a great option for clients with sensitive skin and pregnant women who are looking for a deep exfoliation.
- It can be performed prior to treatments like facials, laser, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels for better product penetration.
- It can be performed frequently.
- It helps makeup go on smoother and more evenly.
- It does not make the hair grow back thicker and darker.
Who Should Consider Dermaplaning?
You might consider dermaplaning if you have the following skin concerns:
- Acne scars
- Actinic keratosis (scaly skin patches that can lead to skin cancer)
- Dull or dry skin
- Peach fuzz (light, soft facial hair)
- Sun-damaged skin
- Fine lines and wrinkles
Who Should Avoid Dermaplaning?
Certain preexisting skin conditions may make dermaplaning unsuitable for you. Before undergoing this procedure, consult your healthcare provider if you have:
- Active acne
- Cold sore outbreaks
- Eczema
- Moles, freckles, skin tags, or other skin growths
- Psoriasis
- Skin burns, such as those from radiation therapy
- Skin rashes (contact dermatitis)
What to Expect Before Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning can be performed by a plastic surgeon, dermatologist, or cosmetologist. Before the procedure, your healthcare provider will:
- Discuss your goals and expectations for the treatment.
- Examine your skin to ensure it’s suitable for the procedure.
- Explain what to expect before, during, and after dermaplaning.
- Review your health history.
Sometimes, your provider may take photos of the treatment area to help you compare the “before” and “after” results.
You may also receive specific instructions to follow before the procedure, such as avoiding smoking for a few weeks, as this can promote faster healing.
What to Expect During Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning typically doesn’t require general anesthesia, but your provider might apply a numbing cream or spray to your face about 30 minutes before the procedure.
You may feel a scratching or stinging sensation, but dermaplaning is usually not painful.
During the procedure, your provider will use a specialized tool called a dermatome to remove hair and dead skin cells. The dermatome resembles an electric razor and has a small blade that gently shaves off the top layers of skin without making cuts.
After the procedure, a soothing gel or ointment may be applied to your skin to reduce redness, swelling, or irritation.
The entire treatment can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour and a half, depending on the size of the area being treated.
What to Expect After Dermaplaning
Following the procedure, your skin may be red, swollen, and slightly tender. Your healthcare provider might recommend over-the-counter pain relief to help manage any discomfort. If swelling persists for more than a week or worsens, be sure to contact your healthcare provider.
What to Expect After Dermaplaning
Recovery after dermaplaning varies for each person, but generally, you can expect the following:
- After 1 Week: Redness and swelling should decrease. You may notice enlarged pores or small whiteheads, which typically disappear as the swelling goes down. Avoid shaving the treated area.
- After 2 Weeks: A scab may form over the treated area and eventually fall off. The skin underneath will appear tight and pink and may feel itchy. Most people can return to work, but strenuous activities should be avoided.
- After 4–6 Weeks: You can gradually resume sports and other activities, but it’s important to avoid sun exposure.
- After 6–12 Months: Continue to stay out of the sun until the treated area has returned to your normal skin tone.
